Commonwealth War Graves  in Denmark



AABENRAA CEMETERY

Aabenraa Cemetery contains a Commonwealth war graves plot of 147 burials of the Second World War, most of them airmen. Two Commonwealth sailors of the First World War are buried elsewhere in the cemetery, in a joint grave marked by a private memorial.

The Commonwealth plot also contains seven Polish war graves.,Aabenraa is a town on the south-east Jutland coast about 25 kilometres north of the German border. Approaching the town from the E45 motorway, take the second turn off to Aabenraa. Follow this road to the traffic lights and turn right towards Aabenraa S into Vestvejen. Descend the hill to the next traffic lights and turn left again into Forstalle. The entrance to the cemetery is 150 metres along on the left side.

From the main entrance follow the central path to the 6th intersection. The Second World War plot is approximately 40 metres to the left, the Cross of Sacrifice being easily visible on approach to the junction. The First World War private memorial is approximately 40 metres along the path to the right, when looking out with the Cross of Sacrifice behind you, and is set back from the path about 10 metres.

AALBORG NEW CEMETERY

Aalborg New Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Aalborg is a major port in Northern Jutland at the head of the Lim Fjord. The cemetery is located in a wooded area at the top of a hill at the western end of the town off the main road to Viborg. The main entrance is adjacent to a large water tower.

From the entrance, follow the path straight ahead for approximately 100 metres. The private memorial, comprising a white marble cross mounted on a black stone base, is adjacent to this path on the left side between the second and third paths leading off to the left.

 AALESTRUP CHURCHYARD

Aalestrup Churchyard contains the graves of eight Commonwealth airmen. Six Polish airmen are also buried in this churchyard.,Aalestrup is a small town in mid Jutland approximately 25 kilometres north of Viborg and 3 kilometres west of the A13 road from Viborg to Aalborg. From the south turn left off the A13 onto the N561, signposted to Aalestrup, and left again onto the local road 1 kilometre from the town. Proceed over the level crossing towards the centre of the town and the red brick church can be seen from the pedestrianised area which must be circumvented.

From the main entrance to the churchyard the war graves can be seen 50 metres straight ahead in a hedged plot with a central red sandstone pillar.

 AARESTRUP CHURCHYARD

Aarestrup Churchyard contains the graves of ten Commonwealth airmen. One Dutch naval officer is also buried here.,Aarestrup is a small village in mid Jutland some 25 kilometres south west of the port of Aalborg, and approximately 3 kilometres east of the E45 motorway from Randers to Aalborg. From the south turn off the E45 at junction 33 to Haverslev and then turn right onto the local road signposted to Aarestrup. Proceed back under the motorway to the village, and on entering the village the large white painted church can be seen on the left.

From the gate at the entrance to the churchyard the war graves plot can be seen some 15 metres away on the left hand side.

AARHUS WEST CEMETERY

Aarhus West Cemetery contains 11 Commonwealth burials.

AASTRUP CHURCHYARD

Aastrup Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Aastrup is in Fyn about 8 kilometres east of Faaborg on the road to Svendborg which is served by a bus route. The churchyard is in the centre of the village. ,,

ADUM CEMETERY

Adum Cemetery contains the collective grave of four Commonwealth airmen.,Adum is in western Jutland, some 5 kilometres east of the main road from Esbjerg to Ringkobing and about half-way between those towns.

 ANHOLT CEMETERY

Anholt Cemetery contains the graves of five Commonwealth airmen.,Anholt is a small island in the Kattegat, midway between Jutland and Sweden.

ASSENS (FYN) NEW CEMETERY

Assens (Fyn) New Cemetery contains the graves of 19 Commonwealth airmen.,Assens is a town and port on the west coast of the island of Fyn. The cemetery is on the east of the town, on the road to Faaborg.

AVERNAKO CHURCHYARD

Avernako Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Avernako is an island off the south coast of Fyn, reached by half an hour's sail from Faaborg The cemetery is about 2 kilometres from the landing-stage. In it is the grave of one British airman.

 BAGENKOP CEMETERY

Bagenkop Cemetery contains the grave on one Commonwealth airman.,Bagenkop is at the south end of the large island of Langeland.

 BOGO CHURCHYARD

Bogo Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

BORSMOSE CHURCHYARD, AAL

Borsmose Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth sailors of the First World War.,Borsmose is a small village in west Jutland, west of the town of Varde. From Varde follow the 431 direction Oksbol. From Oksbol follow the signs to Borsmose Strand and the church is along this road.

BOSTRUP CHURCHYARD

Bostrup Churchyard contains the grave of one unidentified Commonwealth airman.,Bostrup is a village in the northern part of the large island of Langeland.

The churchyard is at the north end of the village.

BRARUP CHURCHYARD

Brarup Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.

 COPENHAGEN (BISPEBJERG) CEMETERY

Copenhagen (Bispebjerg) Cemetery contains a Commonwealth war graves plot of 40 burials, eight of them unidentified.,Bispebjerg Cemetery, in Copenhagen, lies in the north-western part of the city, about 5 kilometres from the centre, on the Frederiksborgvej. The war graves plot is best approached through the rear entrance in Stonaes Alle, a side road off Skoleholdervej, and is to be found in Section BKL43, which is approximately 50 metres from the rear entrance on the left of the path.

This cemetery contains one burial of the Second World War, that of a Danish merchant seaman who served with the Commonwealth forces.

COPENHAGEN WESTERN CEMETERY

Copenhagen Western Cemetery contains 24 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, most of whom were released prisoners of war who died in the winter of 1918/19.

The cemetery also contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen of the Second World War.

Drejo is a small island south-west from Svendborg. In the cemetery is buried 1 airman of the Royal Air Force.

 ESBJERG (FOURFELT) CEMETERY

Esbjerg (Fourfelt) Cemetery contains a war graves plot of 272 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 25 of them unidentified.,Esbjerg is a major port on the west coast of Jutland. From the harbour area, travelling north towards Hjerting on Hjertingvej, take the right fork into Gravlundvej and the cemetery is on the right side.

Approaching the cemetery on Gravlundvej the CWGC plot can be seen on the right just behind the red brick chapel.

ESBJERG NEW CEMETERY

Esbjerg New Cemetery contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, that of an unidentified naval rating whose body was recovered on 25 September 1916.,Esbjerg is a major port on the west coast of Jutland. The main A12 from the north runs straight through the centre of the town, where it becomes Stormgade. The main entrance to the cemetery is in Gormgade, a street in the centre of town leading off Stormgade to the right if approaching from the north..

From the main entrance in Gormgade take the first path off to the left then the fourth to the right. The Commonwealth grave, marked by a Portland headstone, is the twelfth on the right, (Section H, row 8, grave 1)

ESTRUPLUND CHURCHYARD

Estruplund Churchyard contains the collective grave of six Commonwealth airmen.

FAABORG NEW CEMETERY

Faaborg New Cemetery contains the graves of eight Commonwealth airmen.,Faaborg is a small town on the south coast of the island of Fyn, which lies between Jutland and Zealand and is connected to the former by a road-rail bridge and to the latter by train and car ferries. In the New Cemetery, which is on the east side of the town on the main road to Svendborg, the Allied plot is about 23 metres south of the entrance, adjacent to the main road.

FAAREVEJLE CHURCHYARD

Faarevejle Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.

Faarevejle is a village in north-western Zealand, some 32 kilometres north-east of Kalundborg.

 FJALTRING CHURCHYARD

Fjaltring Churchyard contains the grave of one unidentified airman of the Royal Canadian Air Force.,Fjaltring is a village in Western Jutland a few kilometres north of the Nussum Fjord. Approaching the village on the N181 coastal road, the church is signposted from the main road on a small local road loop.

From the entrance to the churchyard follow the path to the left and the single portland headstone will be found in the last plot on the right.

FJERRITSLEV GENERAL CEMETERY

Fjerritslev General Cemetery contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.,Fjerritslev is a small town in Northern Jutland about 20 kilometres west of Aalborg on the north side of the Lim Fjord. Travelling west on the road 11 towards Thisted, Fjerritslev is signposted off to the right on a local road. Go past the first turn off to the crossroads and at the crossroads turn right for Fjerritslev. The cemetery is along here on the right opposite the fire station.

From the main entrance, follow the central path straight ahead to the junction with the eighth path off to the left (approximately 60 metres). The Commonwealth war graves are on this junction.

FREDERICIA NORTHERN CEMETERY

Fredericia Northern Cemetery contains the graves of three Commonwealth airmen, one of them unidentified.,Fredericia is a town on the east coast of Jutland 88 kilometres by rail east of Esbjerg, and about 5 kilometres from the road-rail bridge connecting Jutland with the island of Fyn.

From the E20 turn off at Junction 59 and follow the signs to the town centre. Follow the road onto the Indrering and then turn left to Christianskirken. The cemetery is along here next to the church.

FREDERIKSHAVN CEMETERY

Frederikshavn Cemetery contains a Commonwealth plot of 65 Second World War burials, mostly airmen, and five of them unidentified. Buried elsewhere in the cemetery are four First World War casualties, all naval ratings killed in the Battle of Jutland in 1916.

The Commonwealth plot also contans a Polish war grave.,Frederikshavn is a major port in northern Jutland, about 32 kilometres from the northernmost point of Denmark. The cemetery lies on the northern outskirts of the town on the road 40 to Skagen.

From the road 40, turn left onto the 35 in the direction of Hjorring and at the traffic lights turn right into Skagensvej. From the entrance in Skagensvej take the path to the left to the boundary wall and follow the wall towards the north-east corner of the cemetery until the Cross of Sacrifice in the Commonwealth Second World War plot comes into sight. From this plot the First World War Commonwealth graves may be found by proceeding through the German war graves plot towards the oppposite boundary. The four granite headstones and private memorial will be located approximately 20 metres beyond the German plot.

FURREBY CHURCHYARD

Furreby Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen, one of them unidentified.

,Furreby is a village on the north eastern coast of Jutland about 60 kilometres north of Aalborg. Travelling north on the A55 from Aalborg continue approximately 2 kilometres beyond Lokken and Furreby is signposted off to the left. As the village is approached the church can be seen on the right.

The war graves are located on the right side of the church, adjacent to the boundary wall.

GEDSER NEW CEMETERY

Gedser New Cemetery contains the grave of one unidentified Commonwealth airman.

GL. RYE CHURCHYARD

Gl. Rye Churchyard contains the collective grave of seven Commonwealth airmen.

GORDING CHURCHYARD

Gording Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,

Gording is a small village on the west coast of Jutland about 23 kilometres due south of the port of Lemvig. In the churchyard is buried one Australian airman.

 GRAASTEN CEMETERY

Graasten Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

GRAM CHURCHYARD

Gram Churchyard contains the collective grave of four Commonwealth airmen.,Gram is a small town in southern Jutland approximately 40 kilometres south east of the port of Esbjerg. Approaching the town on the A24 from Esbjerg the church can be seen from the main road on the left hand side.

From the main entrance the war graves are approximately 50 metres along the central path on the right side. There is also a private memorial erected by the local populace next to the war memorial in the grassed area in front of the churchyard.

 HALDUM CEMETERY

Haldum Cemetery contains one Second World War burial, that of a Danish soldier who served with the Commonwealth forces.,Haldum is in eastern Jutland some 26 kilometres north-west of Aarhus.

HARBOORE CHURCHYARD

Harboore Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth sailor of the First World War. Harboore is 10 miles north-west of Lemvig in the Kingkjobing area.

HELLIGSO CHURCHYARD

Helligso Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

HENNE CHURCHYARD

Henne Churchyard contains one burial of the Second World War, that of an unidentified Commonwealth sailor.,,Henne is near the west coast of Jutland, some 15 miles north-west of Varde. The Commonwealth grave is opposite the west door of the church.

HIRTSHALS CHURCHYARD

Hirtshals Churchyard contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, that of an unidentified naval rating whose body was recovered on 7 July 1918.

HJAARDEMAAL KLIT CHURCHYARD

Hjaardemaal Klit Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

HOLBAEK OSTRE CHURCHYARD

Holbaek Ostre Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.,Holbaek is on the Island of Zealand on the main Kalundborg-Copenhagen Road 32 kilometres east of Kalundborg. The cemetery is situated 2 kilometres south-east of the centre of Holbaek in Anders Larsens Vej, near the Danish Military Barracks. The graves are 183 metres south of the main entrance behind the chapel and to the right of the crematorium.

Horne Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

HORSENS EASTERN CEMETERY

Horsens Eastern Cemetery contains one Second World War burial, that of a Danish merchant navy officer who served with the Commonwealth forces.

HORSENS WEST CHURCH CEMETERY

Horsens West Church Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

HOVEN (BRANDE) CEMETERY

Hoven (Brande) Cemetery contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.

HUNE CHURCHYARD

Hune Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman of the Second World War.

Two naval ratings of the First World War are also buried in the cemetery, one from the Battle of Jutland in 1916, the other (unidentified) whose body was recovered in September 1917.,Hune is a small town in northern Jutland about 20 kilometres north of the port of Aalborg. Travelling south from Hjorring on the A55, Hune is signposted on a local road off to the right about 15 kilometres south of Lokken. On reaching the town centre turn right at the crossroads signposted towards the church (pictogram) into Kirkevej. The church can be seen half a kilometre away on the right hand side.

The World War One headstones are adjacent to the boundary wall on the left side of the church and the World War Two headstone is immediately behind the church.

HUSBY CHURCHYARD

Husby Churchyard contains two Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, both airmen. There is also one First World War burial.,Husby is a village in western Jutland just south of the Nissum Fjord. The village lies on the east side of the N181 coastal road, close to the junction with the N537, but the church is on the other side of the N181 and is signposted from that road.

From the main entrance head towards the right of the church and the war graves will be found close to a small side entrance.,The cemetery also contans a monument inscribed with the names of an officer and men of H.M.S. "Medora," wrecked on the 21st October, 1857.

HVIDBJERG ON AA CHURCHYARD

Hvidbjerg on Aa Churchyard contains the graves of three unidentified Commonwealth airmen of the Second World War. Also buried here are three sailors of the First World War, all of whom died in the Battle of Jutland in 1916.,The churchyard is located in the village of Svankaer, which is 48 kilometres south-west of Thisted, Northern Jutland.

From the road 181, which runs between Thisted and Struer, turn off in the direction of Svankaer. Follow this road and the church is in front of you at the junction.

HVIDING CHURCHYARD

Hviding Churchyard contains the joint grave of two Commonwealth airmen, both unidentified.

Hviding is a village in southern Jutland about 12 kilometres south west of the town of Ribe. Approaching from the south on the A11 turn left about 6 kilometres beyond Brons onto the local road signposted to Hogsbro. Continue through the village and turn right into Hviding Kirkevej. The church can be seen about half a kilometre along on the left side.

Follow the path from the main gate of the churchyard around to the rear of the church. The two war graves, marked by portland headstones, are directly behind the church about 10 metres off the path.

 HYLLESTED NEW CHURCHYARD

Hyllested New Churchyard contains the grave of one unidentified Commonwealth airman.

IDUM CHURCHYARD

Idum Churchyard contains the collective grave of seven Commonwealth airmen.,Idom is in western Jutland about 2 kilometres north of the road from Ulfborg to Holstebro and some 10 kilometres south-west of the latter town.

KALUNDBORG GENERAL CEMETERY

Kalundborg General Cemetery contains the graves of six Commonwealth airmen.,Kalundborg is a town of north-western Zealand, 109 kilometres by rail from Copenhagen, and joined by steamer service with Aarhus in Jutland. The general cemetery is at the north end of the town, on the left hand side on the road to Rosnaes fifteen minutes' walk from the railway station.

KAPPEL CHURCHYARD

Kappel Churchyard contains the graves of four Commonwealth airmen, two of them unidentified.,Kappel is a small village in the south-west corner of the island of Lolland, some 13 kilometres south of Nakskov. The churchyard lies to the east of the village, on the road to Vesternaes.

KARLSLUNDE CHURCHYARD

Karlslunde Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Karlslunde is about 24 kilometres south-west of Copenhagen and 2 kilometres west of the main road south from the capital to Vordingborg.

KIRKE VAERLOSE CHURCHYARD

Kirke Vaerlose Churchyard contains the graves of three Commonwealth airmen.,Vaerlose is about 21 kilometres north-west of Copenhagen, and the churchyard is s kilometres west of the road from Copenhagen to Frederiksund.

KIRKEBY CEMETERY

Kirkeby Cemetery contains 32 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, of which 28 are airmen and four are sailors.,The island of Romo is situated off the west coast of Jutland, just north of the German frontier. It is connected by a causeway with the mainland. The nearest railway station is Steaerbaek. Kirkeby is on the east side of the island near its southern end. Follow the main road over the causeway to the traffic lights, turn left at the lights into Havnebyvet and the church is about 2 kilometres along here on the right.

KLITMOLLER CHURCHYARD

Klitmoller Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Klitmoller is a village 16 kilometres west of Thisted in north-western Jutland. The churchyard is in the centre of the village on the west side of the road to Vang.

 KOGE CEMETERY

Koge Cemetery contains one burial of the Second World War, that of a Danish officer who served with the Commonwealth forces.,Koge is a town and port of eastern Zealand, about 40 kilometres south-west of Copenhagen on the main road and railway line to Vordingborg.

 KORSOR CEMETERY

Korsor Cemetery contains the graves of three Commonwealth airmen, one of whom is unidentified.,Korsor is a town and port of western Zealand, the eastern terminus of the train-ferry from Fyn. The cemetery is on the south side of the town on the edge of the water, just left of the main road from Copenhagen. The war graves are located in a plot 228 metres south of the entrance.

LAASTRUP CHURCHYARD

Laastrup Churchyard contains the graves of seven Commonwealth airmen.

,Laastrup is a village in central Jutland about 15 kilometres north of Viborg and about half a kilometre east of the N533 from Viborg to Logstor. Travelling north from Viborg, turn right at the road signposted to Laastrup and the church can be seen on the right hand side.

The dark granite private memorial comprising a central cross and eight inscribed panels can be seen on the left hand side 15 metres from the churchyard gate.

LANDET PARISH CHURCHYARD

Landet Parish Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.

LEMVIG CEMETERY

Lemvig Cemetery contains a war graves plot of 44 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, most of them airmen. Five of the burials are unidentified.,Lemvig is a town in Western Jutland on the south shore of the Nissum Bredning, which forms part of the great Lim Fjord. On reaching the town follow the main road around the harbour and up the hill on the Vestrebjerg. The entrance to the cemetery is on the right side close to the top of the hill opposite a garage.

From the entrance proceed up the slope towards the rear of the cemetery. The Cross can be seen close to the rear boundary.

LODBJERG CHURCHYARD

Lodbjerg Churchyard contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, that of an unidentified naval rating whose body was buried on 29 July 1916.,The Commonwealth grave, grave 71, is south of the chancel.

LOGSTOR GENERAL CEMETERY

Logstor General Cemetery contains the graves of four Commonwealth airmen.,Logstor is a town in northern Jutland about 20 kilometres west of Aalborg on the southern shore of the Lim Fjord. Travelling south on the A29, cross the Lim Fjord at Aggersund and branch off right onto the local road signposted to Logstor. On reaching the town proceed past the first road signposted towards Viborg (roundabout) and turn left at the traffic lights onto the old road to Viborg (Sonderport). The cemetery is on the right side and the war graves are closest to the second entrance on the right.

From the second entrance gate, go straight ahead and turn left at the fourth junction. The war graves are on the right side 30 metres from this junction.

 LONSTRUP CHURCHYARD

Lonstrup Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Lonstrup is a village of northern Jutland some 10 kilometres west of Hjorring.

 LYDERSLEV CHURCHYARD

Lyderslev Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

Lyderslev is in eastern Zealand, to the north of the bay of Praesto, and 8 kilometres south-west of Storehedinge.

MAGLEBY CHURCHYARD, LANGELAND

 Magleby Churchyard, Langeland, contains the graves of six Commonwealth airmen.,Magleby in Langeland is at the southern end of that island, which lies between Fyn and Lolland. The churchyard is south of the village.

MAGLEBY CHURCHYARD, ZEALAND

Magleby in Zealand is in the south-west corner of that island, about 24 kilometres south of Slagelse. In the churchyard, 27 metres to the right of the entrance, is the grave of 1 unknown airman of the Royal Australian Air Force.

MIDDELFART SONDRE CEMETERY

Middelfart Sondre Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

,Middelfart is at the north-western corner of Fyn, on the main railway line from Copenhagen to Jutland. 240 kilometres by rail from Copenhagen. The cemetery is on the west side of the town, at the junction of the Vesterloke Alle and Egevej.

MOSEVRAA CHURCHYARD

Mosevraa Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Mosevra is a small village in west Jutland, south-west of the town of Varde. From Varde follow the 431 in the direction of Oksbol. From Oksbol follow the signs to Vejer Strand and the red brick church is along this road.

NORRE HAVRVIG CHURCHYARD

Norre Havrvig Churchyard contains eight Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, most of them airmen. There is also one First World War burial in the churchyard.,Norre Havrvig is a small town in West Jutland on the narrow spit of land which divides the Rinkobing Fjord from the sea. The church can be found to the north of the town and is signposted from the road 181.

The plot of five war graves and two single war graves lies to the left of the church towards the rear corner. The third single war grave is on the right of the church.

 NORRE LYNGVIG CHURCHYARD

Norre Lyngvig Churchyard contains three Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, two of them airmen and the third an unidentified soldier.

,Norre Lyngvig is a small town in west Jutland on the narrow spit of land which divides the Ringkobing Fjord from the sea. Approaching the town on the N181 the church can be seen on entering the village on the west side of the road.

The plot of two war graves, marked by Portland headstones, are on the right side of the church, and the single war grave, again with a Portland headstone, is immediately behind the church.

 NORRE VORUPOR CEMETERY

Norre Vorupor Cemetery contains the graves of eight Commonwealth airmen, two of them unidentified.

Vorupor is a small town on the west coast of Northern Jutland, about 45 kilometres north of Lemvig and about 19 kilometres west of Thisted.

Follow the main road into the village, then take the turning signposted to Sondre Vorupor. The cemetery is a short way along here on the right surrounded by a white wall.

NYBORG NEW CEMETERY

Nyborg New Cemetery contains the graves of nine Commonwealth airmen, two of them unidentified.,Nyborg is a town and port on the east side of Fyn, the western terminus of the train ferry from Korsor in Zealand. The New Cemetery is in the north-western outskirts of the town, on the road to Odense.

NYSOGN CHURCHYARD

Nysogn Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.,There is no longer any commune by the name of Nysogn, and the churchyard must be located by reference to the nearest village of Kloster, just north of the Ringkobing Fjord in western Jutland.

Kloster is signposted on a local road off the A15 from Ringkobing to the N181 coastal road. Nysogn church can be seen on the right on approaching the village.

The two war graves, marked by portland headstones, will be found behind the church in the rear left corner of the churchyard.

ODBY CHURCHYARD

Odby Churchyard contains the grave of one unidentified Commonwealth airman.,Odby is in north-western Jutland, east of the main road from Struer to Thisted, and 16 kilometres north of Struer.

 ODDEN (OVERBY) CHURCHYARD

Odden (Overby) Churchyard contains the collective grave of three Commonwealth airmen.,This churchyard is near the extreme north-west point of Zealand, on a peninsula, 19 kilometres west of Nykobing. The church is known as Overby church.

ODDER CHURCHYARD

Odder Churchyard contains the graves of four Commonwealth airmen, one of them unidentified.,Odder is a town of eastern Jutland about 21 kilometres south of Aarhus and east of Skanderborg. From Skanderborg follow the 445, direction Torrild. Keep on the 445 to the junction with the 451 and turn left onto the 451 in the direction of Odder. The cemetery is located through the town on the 451 opposite the fire station (Falke).

ODENSE (ASSISTENS) CEMETERY

Odense (Assistens) Cemetery contains a plot of 23 Commonwealth burials, most of them airmen. A Danish merchant seamen who served with the Commonwealth forces is buried elsewhere in the cemetery.,Odense is the third largest city in Denmark on the island of Fyn 153 kilometres by rail from Esbjerg. The cemetery is at the western end of the town, on the road to Assens and the Commonwealth plot is near the entrance and adjacent to the main road. ,Within the Commonwealth plot, the local people have erected a monument in the form of a square column, surmounted by two bronze eagles, and inscribed "In memory of British and Canadian airmen who gave their lives in the battle for freedom during the war 1939-1945".

OKSBY CHURCHYARD

Oksby Churchyard contains two Commonwealth burials, one an airman and the other an entirely unidentified serviceman.,Oksby is a small village in west Jutland south west of the town of Varde. From Varde follow the 431 direction Oksbol. From Oksbol follow the signs to Oksby Blavand, then follow the signs to Blavand. Oksby church is on the left of the road in the village of Blavand.

OMO CHURCHYARD

Omo Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Omo is an island in the Great Belt, some 19 kilometres south of Korsot.

ORSLEV CHURCHYARD

Orslev Churchyard contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.,From the E4 running between Kobenhavn and Rodbyhavn exit onto the 151 at the sign for Uddy. After approximately 5 kilometres Orslev is signposted as one kilometre to the left. The church is located in Orslevej, the main street of the small village. From the entrance ot the churchyard proceed to the left of the church.

OVE CHURCHYARD

Ove Churchyard contains the collective grave of seven Commonwealth airmen.,Ove is in Northern Jutland, 17 kilometres east of Hobro, near the north shore of the Mariager Fjord.

PEDERSKIRKE CHURCHYARD

Pederskirke Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airrman.,Bornholm lies between Sweden and Germany, at the entrance to the Baltic Sea. Pederskirke is near the south-eastern corner of the island.

RANDBOL CHURCHYARD

Randbol Churchyard contains the graves of five Commonwealth airman.

Randbol is a small village in central Jutland approximately midway between Grinsted and Vejle. From Vejle take the N28 towards Grinsted, following signs for the airport (Legoland). After approximately 25 kilometres turn left at the sign for Randbol (NB not the previous junction signed to Randboldal) and follow the road into the village where the white church can be seen on the right. Parking is available in front of the church.

From the entrance to the churchyard, follow the path behind the church and beyond the ancient burial mound (barrow) surmounted by a flagpole. The private memorial, comprising a granite cross 3 metres high and individual memorial panels, can be seen at a distance of 20 metres beyond the barrow.

RANDERS NORTH CEMETERY

Randers North Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Randers is a town of northern Jutland 60 kilometres by rail north of Aarhus. The North Cemetery is on the north side of the town, on the road to Hadsund.

 REERSLEV CHURCHYARD

Reerslev Churchyard contains the collective grave of five Commonwealth airmen.

Reerslev is in western Zealand, on the main road northwards from Slagelse to Jyderup, about 19 kilometres north of Slagelse.

REERSO CHURCHYARD

Reerso Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Reerso is on a peninsula of western Zealand; it is reached by bus from Gorslev, which is about 11 kilometres east of it and on the main road from Slagelse to Kalundborg, about half-way between those towns. The war grave is located in the north-west corner of the new part of the churchyard, about 91 metres from the church.

 RINDBY CEMETERY, NORDBY

Rindby Cemetery contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, that of an unidentified naval rating whose body was recovered on 19 September 1917.,This is on Fano Island. The Commonwealth grave is in the south-east part (grave 7).,,

RINGE CEMETERY

Ringe Cemetery contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.,Ringe is a town of Fyn, half-way by road and rail between Odense and Svendborg.

ROTTBOLL FAMILY GRAVE

The Rottboll family grave is at the east gable of Borglum Kloster church. In it is buried a Danish officer who served with the Commonwealth forces.

,Borglum Kloster estate is in northern Jutland, some 16 kilometres south-west of Hjorring. The war graves is part of a family grave at the east gable of Borglum Kloster church.

 SEJERO CEMETERY

Sejero Cemetery contains the grave of two Commonwealth airmen.,Sejero is an island in Sejero Bay, to the north-west of Zealand.

SEJERSLEV CHURCHYARD

Sejerslev Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Sejerslev is about 19 kilometres north of Nykobing in northern Jutland; the cemetery is in the centre of the village, to the east of the road from Nykobing.

SKAELSKOR GENERAL CEMETERY

Skaelskor General Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Skaelskor is a town of Zealand, about 16 kilometres south-east of Korsor. The general cemetery is at the western end of the town, on the west side of a lake, 1 kilometre from the railway station. The war grave is approximately 228 metres from the entrance.

SKAGEN CEMETERY

Skagen Cemetery contains the graves of four Commonwealth airmen and one merchant seaman of the Second World War.

Also buried here are seven naval ratings of the First World War, five of them unidentified, who were probably killed at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. ,Skagen is a small town close to the northernmost tip of Jutland.

 SKALLERUP CHURCHYARD

Skallerup Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth naval casualty of the Battle of Jutland in 1916.,Skallerup is a village in the far north of Jutland on the eastern coast. Proceeding south on the A55 from Hjorring turn right onto the local road signposted for Lonstrup. After approximately 5 kilometres turn right again at the sign for Skallerup Kirke (3 kilometres), and on approaching the church can be seen on the right hand side. The single war grave lies on the left hand side of the church by the rear wall.

 SKARO CEMETERY

Skaro Cemetery contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen.,Skato is an island to the south of Fyn some 13 kilometres south-west of Svendborg.

SKARRILD CHURCHYARD

Skarrild Churchyard contains the collective grave of seven Commonwealth airmen.,Skarrild is a small village of Jutland about 25 kilometres north-north-east of Esbjerb. It lies to the west of the road (No 18) between Brande and Herning.

SKIVE GENERAL CEMETERY

Skive General Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.

Skive is a town in mid Jutland on the southern shore of the Skive Fjord, which forms part of the larger Lim Fjord. On approaching the town follow the signs for the town centre and head for the main bus station in Soendergade. The entrance from this street to this large cemetery is the closest one to the single war grave.

 SLAGELSE (ST. MIKKELS) CEMETERY

Slagelse (St Mikkels) Cemetery contans the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Slagelse is a town of western Zealand, 92 kilometres from Copenhagen by rail.

SONDERBY (ASSENS) CHURCHYARD

Sonderby (Assens) Churchyard contains the collective grave of five Commonwealth airmen.,Sonderby is a village about 10 kilometres south-east of the town of Assens, in Fyn.

SONDERHO CEMETERY

.Sonderho Cemetery contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen, one of them unidentified.,The island of Fano lies off the west coast of Jutland, just west of the port of Esbjerg. At its southern tip is the village of Sonderho.

 SONDERHO CHURCHYARD, ISLAND OF FANO

Sonderho Churchyard contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, that of an unidentified naval rating whose body was buried on 28 August 1916.,The Commonwealth grave, grave 196, is near the south boundary

SONDRE NISSUM CHURCHYARD

Sondre Nissum Churchyard contains ten Commonwealth burials, six of them airmen.

Sondre Nissum is a village in western Jutland which, as the name suggests, is just south of the Nissum Fjord. Approaching the village on the N181 coastal road, the church is signposted from the main road on a small local road.

From the path leading towards the church from the main entrance, take the third path off to the right and the graves will be found on the left side.

 STENBJERG CHURCHYARD

Stenbjerg Churchyard contains one Commonwealth burial of the First World War, that of a sailor killed in the Battle of Jutland in 1916.,Stenbjerg is a small town on the west coast of Northern Jutland south-west of Thisted. From Thisted follow road number 11, direction Struer. At the junction with the 571 turn right onto the 571 direction Stenbjerg. The cemetery lies west of the village next to the church.

STRANDBY (AARS) CHURCHYARD

Strandby (Aars) Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Strandby is a village in mid Jutland about 40 kilometres south-west of Aalborg and close to the shore of the Lim Fjord. Travelling south on the N533 from Logstor towards Viborg, continue through the village and the church will be seen on the right hand side.

The single private memorial is located immediately in front of the church about 5 metres from the entrance gate.

STRUER CHURCHYARD EXTENSION

Struer Churchyard Extension contains the joint grave of two Commonwealth airmen.,Struer is a town of north-western Jutland about 16 kilometres north of Holstebro on the south shore of the Lim Fjord The churchyard lies south of the town at the top of a hill.

STUBBEKOBING GENERAL CEMETERY

Stubbekobing General Cemetery contains the graves of two Commonwealth airmen, one of them unidentified.,Stubbekobing is a town on the north coast of the island of Falster. The general cemetery is on the south side of the town on the main road to Nykobing Falster.

SVENDBORG GENERAL CEMETERY

Svendborg General Cemetery contains the graves of nine Commonwealth airmen.,Svendborg is a town and port on the south-east corner of the island of Fyn. The general cemetery is in the centre of the town.

 SVINO CHURCHYARD

Svino Churchyard contains a Commonwealth plot of 62 burials, all airmen, eight of them unidentified.,Svino is small village in Southern Zealand, overlooking Dybso Fjord, some 90 kilometres south-south-west of Copenhagen. The Commonwealth Plot is in an extension of the churchyard, to the north of the church.

TARM ISOLATED GRAVES

The Tarm Isolated Graves are those of two Commonwealth airmen.,Tarm is a small town near the west cost of Jutland, about 48 kilometres due north of Esbjerg. The graves are about 2 kilometres south-east of the town, on the road to Oddum, in a corner of a plantation.

THURO CEMETERY

Thuro Cemetery contains one burial of the Second World War, that of a Danish merchant seaman who served with the Commonwealth forces.

Thuro is a small island to the south of Fyn, about 3 kilometres south-east of Svendborg.

TINGLEV CHURCHYARD

Tinglev Churchyard contains nine Commonwealth burials of the First World War. All were prisoners of war from the German camps at Bajstrup. ,Tinglev is a small town in southern Jutland approximately 15 kilometres north of the German border. Travelling through the town on the A8 towards Tonder the church can be seen from the main road on the left side just before reaching the end of the town.

From the main entrance to the churchyard follow the path up past the church and the graves can be seen on the right hand side, the row being marked by a Commission sign.

 TONDER CEMETERY

Tonder Cemetery contains the graves of seven Commonwealth airmen.,Tonder is a small town in south west Jutland just 5 kilometres north of the German border. Approaching the town from the north on the A11/25, turn right at the traffic lights onto the 419 (Nordre Landevej) and left at the crossroads into Ribelandvej. On seeing the fire station (Falck) on the right, turn left into the parking area in front of the Ribelandvej entrance to the cemetery.

From the Ribelandvej entrance follow the path to the eighth junction on the right (row 37). The CWGC graves are on the right side immediately beyond the two Russian graves.

TORNBY CHURCHYARD

Tornby Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,

Tornby is a village near the northern tip of Jutland, about 8 kilometres north-west of Hjorring. In the churchyard on the west side of the village is buried 1 airman of the Royal Air Force.

 TRANEBJÆRG CHURCHYARD

Tranebjaerg Churchyard contains the graves of seven Commonwealth airmen.,Samso is an island lying between Jutland and Zealand, to the north of Fyn. It is reached by ferry from Aarhus in Jutland to Kolby, from which Tranebjaerg, in the centre of the island. The churchyard is in the centre of the village.

TVED (NOLS) CHURCHYARD

Tved (Nols) Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Tved is in eastern Jutland, on a peninsula just across the bay from Aarhus, but 32 kilometres round by road.

 TVEJE-MERLOSE CHURCHYARD

Tveje-Merlose Churchyard contains the joint grave of two Commonwealth airmen.

,Tveje-Merlose is in northern Zealand, 3 kilometres from Holbaek. On leaving Holbaek follow the Slagelse/Ringsted road to the village of Tveje-Merlose. The churchyard is in the centre of the village.

VADUM CEMETERY

Vadum Cemetery contains the graves of 29 Commonwealth airmen.,Vadum is a village in northern Jutland approximately 7 kilometres north of the port of Aalborg on the north side of the Lim Fjord. From Aalborg proceed north on the E45 motorway and exit at junction 20 onto the A11. Follow this road for approximately 5 kilometres and turn right onto the local road signposted for Vadum Kirkegaarde (churchyard). At the crossroads 1 kilometre along that road the church can be seen straight ahead on the left side of the road. The part of the churchyard containing the war graves plot is on the opposite (right) side of the road.

From the entrance to the churchyard the red sandstone memorial wall can be seen immediately on the left.

VANG CHURCHYARD

Vang Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman.,Vang is a village of north-western Jutland about 10 kilometres north-west of Thisted.

 VEDERSO CHURCHYARD

Vederso Churchyard contains the grave of one Commonwealth soldier of the First World War.,Vederso is a village in western Jutland about 15 kilometres north of Ringkobing and 10 kilometres south of the Nissum Fjord. From the A16/28 Ringkobing to Lemvig road turn left at Osterby onto the local road signposted to Madum and Vederso. The church is easily seen in the village.

The single war grave marked by an Oland headstone is in a grassed area towards the rear of the churchyard close to a toolshed.

 VESTRE VEDSTED CHURCHYARD

Vestre Vedsted Churchyard contains the grave on one unidentified Commonwealth airman.

Vestre Vedsted is a village in south west Jutland about 9 kilometres south west of the town of Ribe. Travelling south on the A11 from Ribe turn right onto the local road signposted to Vestre Vedsted. On approaching the village the large white church can be seen from a considerable distance.

From the entrance to the churchyard walk round to the right of the church. The single war grave, marked by a portland headstone, is in a prominent position in a grassed area to the right of the church.

VIBORG CEMETERY

Viborg Cemetery contains the grave of one Commonwealth airman of the Second World War. There is also one First World War burial, that of a released prisoner of war who died at the rest camp at Hald in December 1918.,Viborg is a town in central Jutland about 40 kilometres west of Randers, which lies on the E45 main north-south motorway. From the Ringvej (N13) on the west of the town heading south turn left shortly after passing a water tower on the left into Skivevej. Turn right at the first roundabout into Rodevej and the cemetery is on the left hand side.

From the Rodevej entrance follow the path past the chapel to the far boundary. Immediately before the boundary hedge turn right and follow the path alongside the hedge to the second path off to the right. The plot containing the two portland headstones is in the corner of this junction.
